Five Winds closely following the new Green Building Standard 189.1P
Published by Paulette Fréchette on February 01, 2010
A new standard that will provide baseline criteria for designing, constructing and operating green buildings is now available. Applicable to new commercial buildings and major renovation projects, the new standard addresses site sustainability, water use efficiency, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality and impacts on the atmosphere, materials and resources.
Standard 189.1P, or the Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings as it is also known, was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) in conjunction with the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This is the first such green building standard in the United States.
"The mining and metals industry should pay attention to this new standard," says Five Winds consultant Sophia Wong. "Especially to its provisions for recycled content, regional materials and life cycle assessment."
A preview of the standard has been released on the ASHRAE website at http://www.ashrae.org/publications/page/927
