Five Winds Helps Shape the Future of the Green Products Roundtable and Use of Eco-labels
Published by Paulette Fréchette on January 04, 2010
The Green Products Roundtable, a multi-stakeholder group in the US, continues to advance its work to develop guidance and systems around the marketing of greener products and the use of eco-labels.
Five Winds is one of approximately 25 stakeholders actively participating in the Green Products Roundtable. Five Winds' Senior Consultant, Libby Bernick, represents Five Winds at the roundtable, which will hold its next meeting on January 7 - 9, 2010, at the S.C. Johnson Foundation's Wingspread Center in Racine, Wisconsin.
With similar initiatives taking place in the retail sector, the Green Products Roundtable is looking more holistically at how to improve the uptake of green products in the marketplace. One of its focus areas for 2010 will be to produce guidance to the US Federal Trade Commission as it prepares revisions to the Green Guides, which are designed to help marketers avoid making environmental claims that are unfair or deceptive. Another focus area is to help institutional buyers and consumers sort through the dizzying array of eco-labels to make better purchasing decisions.
According to Bernick, "Government purchasing is a huge market - bigger than Wal-Mart - and will be a big driver for defining what is green and how best to use eco-labels."
