Nickel: Important Part of Climate Change Solution
Published by Paulette Fréchette on February 19, 2010
Five Winds' Sophia Wong publishes article on the contribution of nickel towards fighting climate change in February issue of Corrosion Engineering Science and Technology.
How do metals provide environmental benefit? Answering that question is what Five Winds consultant, Sophia Wong, sought to do in writing an article on behalf of the Nickel Institute. "We all know that metals have an environmental burden," says Wong. "I wanted to demonstrate how nickel also provides an environmental benefit—in its application in a wide range of green technologies."
Five Winds International has been at the leading edge of understanding what sustainability means to the metals and mining sector ever since Five Winds was founded in 1998. In the 2002 book, Eco-efficiency and Materials, the founders of Five Winds International—all worldwide leaders in life cycle thinking—argued that different materials have different life cycle profiles and affect the environment in different ways.
"Metals are inherently durable and infinitely recyclable," says Wong. "Any materials selection assessment needs to take these attributes into account."
