PE and Five Winds Strategic Consulting continues to promote the development and application of life cycle information to ensure greener products are designed, manufactured, used and responsibility managed at their end of life. As we learn the importance of ensuring unexpected and unanticipated consequences of our decision making do not occur, the use of life cycle information to inform those decisions is increasing. Jim Fava, founding director for PEI & Five Winds Strategic Consulting participated in two leadership forums to advance the application of life cycle approaches.
1. As a result of US Executive Order 13514, efforts are underway throughout the US government in developing strategies and tactics to green the federal government. A panel of experts was asked to Demystifying and Applying Lifecycle Analysis. Dr. Fava's presentation set the stage on the status of life cycle approaches and their applications. See a copy of his messages. An overview of the EO 13514 can be found at http://www1.eere.energy.gov/femp/regulations/eo13514.html
2. The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), the organization leading the science development of LCA, held a special session at its NA annual meeting in Boston, the week of November 14 entitled: Debating with the SETAC Stars: Wicked Problems - Sustainability (see http://boston.setac.org/node/44). Jim's presentation on Did LCA Inform SETAC's Growth and Direction or Vice Versa? - outlined the role that SETAC played to advance the science of LCA, influenced the direction of the ISO LCA standard, and partnered with UNEP to promote the application of life cycle approaches globally. See a copy of his materials.
Additionally, Al Iannuzzi, senior director of product stewardship at Johnson & Johnson, recently published a book entitled THE POWER OF GREEN How Greener Products Can Help You Meet Customers' Needs & Build Brand Loyalty. The book offers practical advice on how to design and market greener products and services. He also shares best practices and lessons learned from companies such as Clorox, GE, Timberland, Philips, Apple Inc., Procter & Gamble, and BASF, as well as insights from guest authors Jim Fava and the Shelton Group.
